Douglas Fir 6x6 Timbers

Douglas Fir is a beautiful wood species with an incredibly high strength-to-weight ratio, a warm, soothing color, and can display an exceptionally straight and fine grain that creates a very elegant and distinguished look.

Western Forest Products’ timbers milled from Douglas Fir are sustainably sourced from responsibly managed forest land along the southern mainland coast of British Columbia and across Vancouver Island (with the exception of the very northern tip), as well as in the interior of the province. Known for its combination of durability and fine looks, Douglas Fir is a highly popular choice to work with as the wood seasons well and dries evenly, and remains straight and true with very little distortion or checking (naturally occurring cracks that appear in all large timbers).

Due to its high strength, Douglas-Fir is often used structurally in building and construction projects, as it is incredibly durable and abrasion-resistant, making it suitable for uses where wear is a factor, such as bridges, wharves, and trestles, log homes and commercial buildings.

In addition to its strength and durability, WFP’s Douglas-Fir timbers are also sought after as an appearance product and are among the finest timbers in the world to use where looks as well as strength are important, such as roof trusses, posts and beams.

Indigenous peoples in BC have used Douglas-Fir for centuries in numerous ways including the floors of lodges and sweat lodges, pit cooking fuel, fishing hooks and handles.

  • Douglas Fir contains few resins and will take stains and finishes quite well.
  • For best results coat all six sides before installation.
  • New Douglas Fir timbers that are going to be finished should be protected from the weather before the finish has been applied.
  • Allow product to acclimatize to the environment where it will be installed to avoid unwanted shrinkage or expansion.
  • Fasteners with corrosion resistance should be used. Hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel.
  • Important Note: Never power-wash Douglas Fir because it damages the wood fibers.
